Bindyarani Devi won the first Commonwealth Games medal. The 23-year-old weightlifter from Manipur won the silver medal in the 55 kg category.
She lifted 202 kilograms in total. India has won four Commonwealth Games medals, all from weightlifting. The gold medal was won earlier by a weightlifter Mirabai Chanu.
Sanket Mahadev Sargar won the silver medal and Gururaj Pujari won the bronze medal. India is now ranked eighth in the medal standings with one gold, two silver and one bronze.

Bindyarani Devi’s first snatch effort saw her lift 81kg. On her second and third attempts, she lifted 84 and 86 kilograms respectively. After snatching, she came third overall. The first clean and jerk of the Indian weightlifter weighed 110 kg. She made an unsuccessful 114 kg attempt on her second try. She lifted the weight of 116 kg on her third attempt to win the silver medal. Overall, it was the last try in the game. At the Commonwealth Championships last year, she won the silver medal.
Bindyarani now has a CWG medal to show for her efforts after winning medals in several weightlifting competitions. Previously, in 2021, Bindyarani won a gold medal in the Clean & Jerk competition of the World Weightlifting Championships. She also managed to snatch 84 kg, for a total lift of 198 kg, placing fourth overall. His other achievements include gold and silver at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2019 and 2021.
Team Nigeria’s first gold medal
Weightlifter Olarinoye Adenike Adijat won Team Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
At the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Olarinoye won Nigeria’s first gold medal in the competition on Saturday night lifting 92kg in the women’s 55kg event.
Olarinoye was one of Nigeria’s gold medal contenders, and her performance in the final matched her pre-match ranking.
