On Sunday, March 13, MVRHS senior Zachary Utz competed in the New Balance Nationals Indoor (NBNI) Championships at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City. Zach qualified for the one mile event in the championship division.

The NBNI was a three-day extravaganza crowning national champions through 68 championship events, 51 rising star events and 14 freshman events. NBNI continues the tradition of high school championship races at the New York Armory, which dates back to 1999.

Despite a stubborn head cold, Zach adapted to run his race, started, but quickly discovered that his condition wouldn’t let him perform to the best of his abilities. He finished the one-mile event with a time of 4:25.41, seven seconds faster than the one-mile race he ran a week before.

Although disappointed, Zach says, “The biggest win was just getting there. I can’t wait for the spring MVRHS track and field season to begin soon. And many successes beyond.

Coach Don Brown acknowledged Utz’s successful indoor season saying, “Zach went from a foot injury to national championships in nine weeks. Pretty impressive. I expect great things from him in the spring.
