Take part in the 2023 European Statistical Challenge – Products Eurostat News

The European Statistical Contest (CES) 2023 is launched! High school students from 19 countries will participate, first at national level and then at European level, in the sixth edition of this statistical literacy competition.

Teamwork to solve statistical problems

ESC is a school competition in which teams of high school students compete by solving statistical problems, researching data and producing statistical analyses. The aim is to promote statistical literacy among students, while encouraging teachers to use new teaching materials based on official statistics.

As the competition reflects the different study programs across Europe, it is divided into two phases:

  1. The national phase, in which students compete against their peers in their own country using questions relevant to their studies; and
  2. a European phase, where the finalists represent their country at European level and produce short videos on a statistical topic.

More than 17,000 students from 19 European countries participated last year

More than 17,000 students from 19 countries took part in the fifth edition of the competition, which took place during the 2021-2022 school year. Using official statistics, candidates for the European final had to present their conclusions on what official statistics reveal about the environment in their country/region. The students produced some really powerful videos. The two winning teams were announced on June 3.

Slovakia joins the contest this year

The sixth edition of the ESC is currently underway in 19 countries. 18 countries also participated in previous editions of the competition: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. 1 country is new to the competition: Slovakia.
