No obstacles too high, difficult or slippery for Ragged Mountain Scuttle competitors

CAMDEN – The seventh Ragged Mountain Scuttle obstacle course took off – and over – Ragged Mountain on Sunday morning, September 19 at the Camden Snow Bowl.

The 3.2-mile scuttle race course on the Kuller Trail allowed runners and walkers to enjoy the rugged terrain and great views at the top, while tackling over 20 obstacles.

The course offered a variety of natural and man-made obstacles on a trail with a lot of elevation. The majority of the event took place on a mid-level trail. However, the trail had some steep inclines and went up to 500 feet.

Proceeds from the event supported the Snow Bowl Grade 4 Ski Learning Program and One Community Many Voices, a Rockland-based charity. OCMV, a 501c (3), provides proactive solutions to prevent a temporary barrier from turning into a financial, self-confidence or well-being crisis when no other resource is available. In return, the recipients pay it through self-selected volunteering.

After being put on hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic, the event found its marks in 2021, to make a comeback. However, the challenges still presented obstacles for the organizers, volunteers and participants.

Audrey Lovering of the OCMV said it was the first time in the event’s seven years that rain had impacted the trails and obstacles on the course.

Heavy rain the night before the event drenched portions of the trails and obstacles, which added additional challenges for runners in the form of mud and slippery trail sections, as well as slippery obstacles.

The “hot step” obstacles proved to be the most difficult for the competitors to overcome, its steep angles being damp from the rain.

“This event is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors and 120 volunteers who collectively donate 1,300 hours of their time to make this event happen,” Lovering said ahead of the event.

Volunteers assemble the obstacles, and also help at the start and finish lines, as well as throughout the course. With the Midcoast still affected by COVID-19, in the days leading up to the race, the event ran out of nearly 20 volunteers.

However, the event was still a success with 180 people, of all ages, ready to face the course and the obstacles. Two hardy souls endured the course twice in a row, covering 6.4 miles.
