Bill Belichick left the NFL Draft saying Cam Newton was the New England Patriots starter.
It still could be, but No.15 pick Mac Jones is doing all he can to take on the role. The Alabama product has earned the respect of Belichick, and offensive lineman Trent Brown’s assessment carries weight.
“Mac, he’s a young man, but you can’t really refer to him as a young man,” Brown said. “You can tell he’s been in a place where there’s coaching. I think he’s going to be special here in the future.
Newton had his best practice on the last day of the minicamp and the former MVP isn’t going to give up the position easily. The 32-year-old has a year of experience in the Patriots system under his belt and has earned the greatest respect from the coaching staff.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated briefly touched on the subject and gave Jones a positive assessment.
“The feedback I got about Jones is that he’s what the Patriots thought they got when they took him 15th, which is he’s an exhilarating field general, although it is somewhat physically limited, ”Breer wrote.
“My feeling right now is that Jones has done enough in the spring to deserve a real competition with Cam Newton this summer.”
The Patriots have training camp at the end of July and that will give better insight into the status of the two quarterbacks.
