It didn’t take long for the Wayne native Marina-Alex participate in the New Jersey breakfast of Taylor ham, eggs and cheese when she arrived in her home state this week to participate in the LPGA Cognizant Founders Cup to Montclair Upper Country Club in Clifton, New Jersey
“It’s a date here,” Alex said at Tuesday’s press conference. “If you’re from Jersey or Jersey, it’s a weird thing we only do here apparently, but it’s awesome. The bagels here are better than anywhere in the world.
As soon as Alex landed on Sunday, she began her heartwarming, nostalgic tour by heading to Luigi’s in East Hanover, an Italian restaurant owned by a friend’s father, to catch up and celebrate her latest accomplishment: Win the Palos Verdes LPGA Championship May, the 1st. She knew the week would be hectic and wanted to take the time to see some of her closest friends before the tournament.
“I think the timing was a bit crazy, mainly because I came away from the win, which was amazing. It’s been a long time. Now I’m heading into this week, which is a really big game at home. Less Mountain Ridge is the closest I’ve ever played to an LPGA event in my hometown,” Alex said Tuesday. “I think whatever it is, it’s going to be a little crazy, and now it’s really amplified, but that’s cool. I try to enjoy it and I try to save some energy to prepare for this week because I would like to play.
Alex starts the first round of the Founders Cup at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, grouped with Yuka Saso of Tokyo, Japan and Allisen Corpuz of Kapolei, Hawaii, on the first tee. By Tuesday, she had already purchased a dozen tickets for friends and family, and since the tickets are daily, not weekly, she said she would provide many more by the end of the week.
One of seven 2022 LPGA Tour winners competing, Alex also finished two other top-10 finishes this year, including a tie for fourth in the LPGA Drive On Championship at Crown Colony in Fort Myers, Fla. and a tie for 10th in DIO Implant LA Open now. This is his eighth participation in the Founders Cup.
