AMD Says RDNA 3 GPUs Are RTX 4070/4080 Competitors

Last night, AMD officially announced Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX as its new RDNA 3 graphics card series, however, the company did not share any direct performance comparisons with Nvidia’s new RTX 4090 GPU, contrary to what fans were expecting.

As reported by Gamer on PCfollowing the GPU announcement and during a Q&A session, AMD Radeon Senior Vice President and General Manager Scott Herkelman addressed the lack of comparison with any Nvidia GPU during the show stating that RTX 4090 is in a separate segment.

“What I would say is we’re competing at a thousand dollars and under,” Herkelman said. “I think that chip was in a segment of its own, and we’re really looking over $1000. We don’t know what their 4080/4070 really is, but I guess it’s somewhere in that range in in terms of class, but I believe in performance and what we offer in terms of price.”

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is priced at $999, while Nvidia’s RTX 4090 is priced at $1,599. Even Nvidia’s RTX 4080 is priced higher than the RX 7900 XTX for $1,199. Although there is no official data to compare the new flagship GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, it looks like RTX 4090 should be the winner in the direct performance comparison on paper due to shipping more than 82 TFLOPs compared to RX 7900 XTX’s 61 TFLOPs, but that doesn’t show how big the real performance difference might be.

Regarding the fact that Nvidia RTX 4080 has yet to launch, this leaves AMD with no direct competitor at this time to compare its new RDNA 3 performance as well. As a result, the announcement charts only compare RDNA GPUs 3 to previous AMD graphics cards.

Unlike Nvidia which significantly increased the price of its new generation GPU, AMD is launching the new flagship GPU at the same price as its previous flagship RX 6900 XT graphics card. This will surely give AMD the upper hand for gamers who are looking for great performance at a reasonable price, especially if RTX 4090 couldn’t offer a performance privilege worthy of spending an extra $600.
